"We Bring Art to Life and Life to Art!"
In business for 26 years as a 501c3, we are an incubator with strong outreach programs to the community.
We are the largest, constant physical art gallery in Carteret County and most likely the first “ art museum” experience very young members of our community have ever seen. Local artists collaborate improving their own art while learning about the art business.
We have moved to 1702 Arendell St to be the new Carolina Artist Gallery within the Arts Council of Carteret County's new Art Center
Hours are 11AM to 5PM

We are thrilled to have Carolyn Temple as the judge for Afloat! She was given a small camera and Kodak instruction book when she was nine years old and then a 35 mm camera upon graduation from high school. Those gifts started a lifetime passion of photographing the beauty in world surrounding her and the important people in her life.
Carolyn taught and coached volleyball, track, and gymnastics at West Carteret High School for thirty years. In 1991, she started Coastal Image Photography in Morehead City, specializing in wedding photography, family beach portraiture, senior photos, commercial photography, and real estate photography. Currently, she has been selling her art photography at the Seafood Festival, the Decoy Festival, and the Mistletoe Magic Gift Show at the Civic Center.
Many of her photos have been featured in the Crystal Coast Visitor Guide, with two of those being the cover photos. Six of the past Insider’s Guide local maps have used her photos as cover photos.
She has been active in photographic competitions with the Professional Imaging Group of Eastern North Carolina, the Professional Photographers of NC, the Professional Photographers of America, and the American Society of Photographers. In PPNC, she has won the Best in Show award two times and was awarded the Photographer of the Year award in 2020. In the 2019 PPA International Photographic Competition (6,700 entries), she had two of the top ten Landscape/Nature photos, with one of them placing third internationally.

Announcing the Awards from Wild Horses of the Outer Banks Show

Friends:
Join us, once again, to
Celebrate and Support
our
“Wild Horses
of the
Outer Banks”.
Learn more about these spirited animals from the experts who fought for their survival against relentless odds.
Note from Deborah Phillips PA & Heather Sink about the Judging Criteria used
Carolina Artist Gallery,
Thank you for inviting both Debbie Phillips and me to judge your Wild Horses of the Outer Banks Exhibit. The task of judging this beautiful show was not easy as there are many parts to be considered when judging an art show.
We considered:
How is the work organized? Example: Composition. Value. Color etc.
How well is the work created? Craftmanship. Technical aspects. Presentation.
Interpretation: Is there a story, message or feeling conveyed in the work? Does the work stand out because it is different or creative?
What attracts the viewer to the work? What makes us cross the room and look closer and keeps us engaged?
Ultimately, the works that were selected to be awarded were works that drew us to them and kept us interested for many reasons. This does not mean that the other works were of lesser value. Judges are human too and relate to various subjects, colors, textures and how a piece makes one feel.
Putting yourself out there and showing your work shows grit and determination not unlike the Wild Horses of the Outer Banks. Carry on creating and thank you for making the world a better place by uplifting your community.
It was an honor to be one small cog in this show.

THE CAROLINA ARTIST GALLERY HAS SOME VERY EXCITING NEWS FOR THE ARTS COMMUNITY OF CARTERET COUNTY!
The Arts Council of Carteret County (ACCC) and the Carolina Artist Gallery (CAG) have been working for many months now toward a common goal, a strong and vibrant cultural arts community for all of Carteret County. With a united mission and purpose, the merger of our two organizations will provide enhanced services while streamlining the cost of operations. The CAG is thrilled to announce we will be merging with the ACCC later this year.
This means a few changes for CAG. The doors at our present location will close at the end of our current show, Under the Sea, on July 9. We will be moving our point of operations to the newly renovated space at 1702 Arendell which will be the center of operations for the ACCC. The projected date of our grand opening in this space will be the beginning of August. This will mean that our show, Wild Horses of the Outer Banks will be postponed until next year, date to be announced. We will open with the next scheduled show, Upcycle, on September 10. Entry deadline for this show is September 3.
Our two organizations, that now will be one, are passionate about giving the arts a home in this beautiful coastal region. There will be many grand opening events to be announced as well as great programs in the future!! Stay tuned, the best is yet to come.
Thank you to the Arts Council for your dedication; many hours have gone into making this a reality. We are proud to be a part of your family!

Christine Provard

Christine is a well-known seascape artist residing in New Bern, North Carolina. Her coastal landscapes and depictions of local wildlife reflect her love for her adopted coastal home of eastern North Carolina.
Originally from Ohio, Christine retired from a career in Nursing in 2017 and relocated to New Bern with her husband Rick in 2018. Together they spend time exploring the NC coastline, where she finds inspiration for her art at the “water’s edge”.
“I’ve always been happiest at the water’s edge. I love painting there as I find my peace and joy in the connection with the water and shore. I have a quote that says, ‘where the sea meets soul’, and that sums up the heart of my art too”.
In New Bern, Christine’s work can be seen at both the Community Artist Gallery and Studios and the Bank of the Arts. Her art is also available at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center in Morehead City and Harker’s Island, North Carolina.
Recently juried into the 2020 North Carolina Watercolor Society Show, Christine also has exhibited art in the Twin Rivers Art Association Annual Show, the Studio Tour and the Bank of the Arts Critter Show. She is a member of both North Carolina and Coastal Carolina Plein Air groups. She has studied under watercolorists Barney Cole and Tony Couch, among others. In addition to watercolor, she enjoys exploring creativity in oils and mixed media.
She also is available for commissioned work.

Awards are as follows:
Honorable Mention- "Sea Dragon", Susan Mason, photograph "This photograph was enjoyable to review. I felt compelled to look further into the piece to find the story and was pulled in. It was quite a beautiful piece and presented well. There was a good balance of values that also drew the viewer into the piece to discover the meaning and find the dragon! I felt this piece was a fresh look and interesting. Honorable Mention- "Well Played Worm!", Marie Smith, Felt "I really enjoyed the creativity of this piece. It was a fresh idea of Under the Sea-on the surface. I loved the beauty of the felted work and how the artist mixed with metal. This work, caught my eye and the originality was spot on. Skill was evident also. Third Place-
"Songs of the Deep", Tracey Penrod " As I considered this piece, I was impressed with the skills presented. I enjoyed the techniques used to consider the Ocean depths. I found myself brought into the painting and seeing all the shapes and looseness used to describe the depth of the water. This painting is quite creative. I enjoyed the different values and shapes used to create it. There is a wonderful story as you linger in this painting." Second Place-
"Girl with Hat-Marina", Kathleen Dentinger As I took a look at this piece using the above classes of judging, I found this piece to have wonderful originality and use of color. I felt like I was meeting the Mermaid and she was telling me her story through her eyes. She invited me to stroll through the painting. Very creative! Excellent composition as well. First Prize-
"Buoy", Liz Morton As I strolled through all the entries, at first glance I was immediately captivated by her painting and choice of colors. I found it to be an emotive piece as I looked at it again when individually judging this piece using the above criteria. Found her painting to be quite unique, felt like I was taking a journey in the sea, mystical. I loved the balance and use of colors and the artist's technique was clean and well executed. |

Bridges and Lighthouses
A judged show of 2 and 3 dimensional work
September 4th, 2021 – October 23rd, 2021
The Art Show Awards are presented on the video attached below.
This show will feature art that tells the story of real bridges and lighthouses as well as the symbolism of what bridges and lighthouses represent. All of us have at one time or another said to ourselves “I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it” as a way to focus on here and now and as a way to calm our anxious thoughts. We also, from time to time, think of our plan as a bridge to get us from where we are now to a distant goal that appears difficult to achieve. Just as the beacon of a lighthouse helps boats and ships stay out of trouble while navigating waters at night, we often are sure that keeping our eye on the “beacon” of our well thought out plan will lead us where we want to go and to what we want to achieve. So, not only do bridges allow us to cross bodies of water or rough terrain that would be difficult to cross otherwise, symbolically they lead us to better lives and the ability to determine our own future. Lighthouses keep us safe in real life by pointing out dangers and obstacles to avoid, but symbolically represent guiding and directing us and offering us a way to achieve our goals and aspirations.
This show will be judged by a renowned local artist, Cathy Martin. Cathy is a professional photographer with over 20 years of experience making images ranging from landscapes to weddings. Her work has been displayed throughout eastern North Carolina and is available through her Hotshots Photography Studio in Cape Carteret and her website www.hotshotsbycathy.com. Her work hangs in numerous retail establishments, galleries, restaurants, and homes throughout the state and beyond. Our thanks to Cathy for taking on this Carolina Artist Gallery show.

Folly- Art for the Fun of it!!!!!
And the Winners are!!!!
Karen van Gamper as the Folly Director reports the notes from our Judge, as follows: Lou, from Arts and Things really took time and did an excellent job judging a complicated and complex group of entries in many different mediums. Her choice for First Place was Marguerite Juner for her watercolor "Net Gain". This was the beautiful mermaid in a gold frame. Next, she awarded Neil Stetson Second Place for his photograph "Floating Dock." I was really delighted that this unusual photograph was recognized. Lou chose Richard Von Hoorn's Assemblage "Man Smoking Pipe", certainly an unusual image, as Third place winner. Lorraine McElroy received an Honorable Mention for "Bloomin Folly". Her magnificent and complicated ceramic floral creation certainly deserved an award. And, finally, my own painting "Spirit Walker" received an Honorable Mention." Sincerely, Karen Van Gamper Thank you Lou arts-things.com

Parks and Recreation Campers
Still have some of these beautiful masks ready for pick up at Parks & Recreation Art Room
Morehead City Parks and Recreation Summer Campers & Carolina Artist Gallery
Mask Makers- 10-12 year old campers used ceramic clay and glazes to make colorful expressive masks that are on display in the gallery until August 25. Parents and family have been invited to a reception on that date, 12-4, in their child's honor. At that time the young artist can take their work home.
Treasure Hunt is an age appropriate way for children to look around the gallery methodically by using the icon on the page to find the actual piece of art. Writing down the information on the label brings them closer to understanding that what they are looking at is actually made by someone.
Carolina Artists Gallery invites any group to go on this "Treasure Hunt" simply by calling the gallery to arrange a time.
